Behind the main bowl at the Jean-Löring-Sportpark, in the Cologne district of Zollstock, sits the artificial pitch that carries the load nobody sees on a matchday poster. It is where the second string, the U19s and the women's side of SC Fortuna Köln play, along with other teams passing through and the training sessions that fill the week between fixtures.
The complex was known as the Bezirkssportanlage Köln-Süd — the district sports ground, Cologne South — until 2014, when it was renamed after Jean Löring, the club's former president. The artificial surface has its own history within that, though it is a murky one.
What that leaves is a ground defined by function rather than occasion.
