About

The Coppa Italia serves as the primary knockout cup competition for women's handball in Italy, operating independently from the league structure. Organised by the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Handball (FIGH), the tournament offers a distinct pathway to silverware separate from the Serie A1 regular season. Unlike the league which determines the national champion, this cup bears no direct European qualification attached to its victory.

The event utilises a "Final Eight" format, bringing together the top-placed clubs from the first half of the Serie A1 regular season. The entire tournament takes place over a weekend in February at a single neutral venue. Participants face a single-elimination bracket comprising quarter-finals, semi-finals, and a final, all played as one-off matches. This condensed structure contrasts with previous iterations that included Final Six editions, establishing the current standard for the competition.

PDO Salerno stands as the most successful club in the history of the tournament, having secured the title seven times across various seasons. ASD HC Sassari follows with six victories, while Amatori Conversano and Pallamano Rimini have each claimed the trophy four times. Recent dominance has been observed by AC Life Style Handball Erice, who have won the title in consecutive editions.

The competition was officially founded in 1987, with the inaugural edition held in the 1987–88 season. Pallamano Cassano Magnago claimed the first title before other clubs consolidated their status over subsequent decades. The tournament remains restricted to top-tier Serie A1 clubs, maintaining its exclusivity regardless of promotion or relegation rules within the league pyramid.

Teams such as Mestrino Handball Women, Pontinia Women, Dossobuono Women, Erice Women, Oderzo Women, and Leno Women are among those participating in the current landscape of Italian women's handball, competing within a system that prioritises high-stakes knockout football over the grind of the regular season.
