Prva liga (Montenegro) 2026/27

The Montenegrin Men's Handball First League stands as the premier professional competition for the sport within the nation. Organised by the Handball Federation of Montenegro, the tournament represents the pinnacle of domestic achievement for clubs across the country. Established in 2006, the league emerged following Montenegro’s independence, replacing a joint Serbian-Montenegrin entity to become the sole senior men's competition in the region.

The structure of the campaign has evolved significantly over time. Initially featuring eight teams, the field expanded to ten clubs, including RK Lovćen, RK Budućnost, RK Berane, and RK Brskovo. The season follows a traditional two-round robin format, where each side plays eighteen matches. After this regular phase, the competition splits into two distinct groups. The top four teams contest a mini-league to decide the national champion, while the remaining six battle to avoid relegation. This split format was introduced after the dissolution of the Second League in 2021, which effectively removed active promotion and relegation mechanics with a lower tier for the current era.

RK Lovćen Cetinje holds the record as the most successful club, claiming thirteen titles since the league's inception. This dominance includes a period of sustained success from 2018 to 2024. Other winners include RK Budućnost Podgorica with two titles, alongside single victories for RK Berane and RK Mojkovac, now known as Brskovo. The 2008–09 final between Budućnost and Lovćen remains a historical landmark, drawing 4,000 spectators and noting post-match incidents. The 2019–20 season concluded early due to the pandemic, with Lovćen declared champions based on the standings at the time of interruption. The competition is currently sponsored by SBbet and operates under the name SBbet Prva liga.
