About

The Lithuanian Handball League stands as the premier men's professional handball competition within Lithuania. Organized by the Lithuanian Handball Federation, which was established in 1991, the tournament traces its official origins to 1992. This founding date follows the restoration of independence, although unofficial championships were contested in 1990 and 1991, both secured by Granitas Kaunas.

The current season features eight clubs, including Alytaus Varsa-Stronglasas, Dragūnas Klaipėda, and HC Sviesa. The competition structure divides the year into a regular season and a playoff phase. The team finishing first in the regular season advances directly to the semi-finals, while those ranked second through seventh enter the quarter-finals. The semi-finals and finals are decided by best-of-5 series, and the bronze medal match follows a best-of-3 format.

Granitas Kaunas holds the record for the most titles in the league's history with seventeen victories. This includes a streak of fifteen consecutive championships spanning from 1991 to 2005. Dragūnas Klaipėda ranks as the second most successful side with eleven titles, achieving dominance in the late 2010s by winning six times in seven years. VHC Šviesa also claimed four consecutive titles between 2021 and 2024. Dragūnas Klaipėda remains the reigning champion after winning the 2025–2026 season.

The league has undergone several notable reforms over the years. A rebranding in the 2014–2015 season saw the name change to Vivus.lt Rankinio lyga, expanding the field to ten teams and introducing a Supercup. The 2023 rebranding unified the visual identity for both men's and women's competitions.

The small number of participating teams contributes to a concentrated competitive landscape. Lithuanian clubs utilize the Baltic Handball League as a regional platform alongside participation in European Handball Federation competitions.
