About

Premijer Liga is the premier men's handball championship in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The competition stands as the highest level of domestic play, organized by the national federation. It traces its modern unified structure to 2001, when the sport merged three separate entity leagues that had operated during the 1990s. This consolidation created a single national table, a format that has defined the league ever since. The season follows a regular double round-robin schedule before splitting into a decisive playoff phase. Clubs finishing high in the regular standings, including those competing in the regional SEHA League, enter a knockout tournament to crown the national champion. The bottom five teams face relegation to the First Leagues of Republika Srpska and the Federation of BiH. Promotion from these lower tiers involves three champions. RK Izviđač Ljubuški holds the record for success in the unified era. Depending on how the transitional 2000/01 season is counted, the club has secured eleven or twelve titles. Recent victories include the 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025 campaigns. RK Borac Banja Luka ranks second with five or six titles. While Bosnian clubs have participated in the multinational SEHA League, the Premijer Liga remains the sole domestic competition determining the national champion and European qualification spots. The league’s history reflects the political fragmentation of the country, with the unified structure fully realized in the 2002–03 season after initial resistance from Republika Srpska clubs. Administrative challenges in 2025 have not altered the fundamental structure of the post-war unification.

The current season features six clubs: Derventa, Gorazde, Gracanica, Izviđač Ljubuški, Konjuh Živinice, and Krivaja. The league continues to operate under the framework established in the early 2000s, balancing domestic integrity with regional participation.
