About
The European Men's U20 Handball Championship stands as the premier continental competition for male handball players under the age of 20. Organised by the European Handball Federation (EHF), the tournament traces its origins to 1996, when it began under the name the European Men's Junior Handball Championship. A major structural shift occurred in 2004 when the EHF standardised age categories, renaming the event to reflect the new under-20 limit. This change aligned the competition with broader international youth standards and marked a significant evolution in the tournament's identity.
The championship operates on a biennial cycle, bringing together national squads for intense competition across Europe. The format features a group stage where teams are divided into groups, typically comprising four groups of six teams. Performance in this phase determines progression to a knockout stage that includes quarter-finals, semi-finals, a final, and a third-place match. This structure ensures a balanced mix of group play and high-stakes elimination games, testing both consistency and peak performance.
Historical success in the tournament highlights the dominance of certain nations. Denmark and Spain lead the all-time medal table, each having secured four titles. Denmark’s victories came in 1996, 1998, 2008, and 2010, while Spain claimed theirs in 2012, 2016, 2022, and 2024. Germany follows closely with three titles. The most recent edition, held in 2024, saw Spain defeat Portugal 35–31 in the final to claim their fourth championship. The tournament serves as a critical qualifier for the IHF World Men's U21 Championship, offering a pathway for young players to reach the global stage.
The competition currently features 24 participating national teams, reflecting its growth and importance in European handball. Teams such as Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, the Faroe Islands, and France regularly compete, showcasing the depth of talent across the continent. The event remains a cornerstone for developing future stars in the sport, providing a platform for young athletes to demonstrate their skills against the best in their age group.
