About

The Trophée des Champions is the French Handball Super Cup, a single-match event that opens the new season. Organized by the Ligue Nationale de Handball (LNH), the competition was officially founded in 2010. While a Challenge des Champions took place in 1996, the LNH considers the 2010 edition in Monaco the start of the continuous competition.

The match features the winner of the previous season's LNH Starligue and the winner of the Coupe de France. If one club wins both titles, the league runner-up takes their place. The game is played in August or September and serves as the official opening of the calendar year. There is no promotion or relegation attached to the result.

Paris Saint-Germain is the most successful club with five titles, won in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2024. Montpellier Handball holds four championships, claimed in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2025. HBC Nantes has secured three titles, in 2017, 2022 and 2023. The competition was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.

The trophy remains distinct from the LNH Starligue, which uses home-and-away matches, and the Coupe de France, a knockout tournament. It is considered a minor honour compared to those major prizes, yet it is the first accolade awarded in the season. The event does not carry an official sponsor in its name.
