Jeisson Andrés Vargas Salazar

Jeisson Vargas left Chile for North America at 18, when Montreal Impact paid around $3 million for 60% of his rights after two seasons at Universidad Católica. The following years were spent shuttling between countries rather than settling in Canada. A loan took him to Estudiantes de La Plata in Argentina, where he made nine league appearances without finding the net, before he returned to Montreal.

A loan back to Universidad Católica in 2019 brought the most decorated stretch of his career: the Torneo Clausura title and the Supercopa de Chile, adding to the league championship he had already won there in 2015–16. That spell also produced an unusual contractual detail — his Montreal deal included clauses imposing heavy penalties if he ever signed for Colo-Colo or Universidad de Chile, rivals of his boyhood club.

He eventually did join Universidad de Chile anyway, in 2022, after two seasons at Unión La Calera. A six-month loan to Al-Rayyan in Qatar followed in 2023, then a year at Huachipato as a free agent in 2024, before he signed for Deportes La Serena in 2025.

Off the pitch, Vargas has faced repeated allegations of domestic violence. A dispute while at Estudiantes in 2017 required police intervention, and in March and April 2019, during his loan spell at Universidad Católica, his wife reported him twice for intrafamily violence, resulting in orders for him to leave the family home. The episodes drew public criticism in Chile.
