Luis Romo

Luis Romo was released by Cruz Azul's youth ranks at 15, moved on to Querétaro's academy, and made his professional debut against Atlas in 2018, going on to captain the side before Cruz Azul brought him back in January 2020. That second spell at Cruz Azul is the one people remember: he helped the club win the Guardianes 2021 title, ending a 23-year wait for the championship, and followed it with the Campeón de Campeones. For that season he was named Liga MX MVP and Best Defensive Midfielder, and he was picked for the Best XI in both 2020 and 2021.

A move to Monterrey followed in 2022, before a return to Cruz Azul in 2024 and, in January 2025, a transfer to Guadalajara. Internationally, Romo was part of the Mexico squad that took bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and won the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup, scoring twice against Honduras in the group stage. He lifted the CONCACAF Nations League in 2024–25 having been a runner-up in 2021 and 2024, and travelled to the 2022 World Cup without playing. At the 2026 World Cup he did play a decisive part, scoring the winning goal in the 50th minute of a 1-0 victory over South Korea in the group stage.

Romo has also been recognised individually along the way, picking up Liga MX Player of the Month honours on three occasions and sharing the league's top assist tally in the Apertura 2024.
