Al Kuwait

The Al Kuwait Sports Club Stadium in the Kaifan district seats 12,350, close enough to the pitch that home league fixtures feel cramped in the best sense. When the fixture list turns continental and demand outgrows that ground, the club moves to the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium in Ardiya, built for 60,000.

The club was formed on 20 October 1960 and carries the nickname "The Brigadiers," taken from the Arabic Al-Ameed, the military rank of brigadier, chosen to mark its place among the senior institutions of Kuwaiti football. It is the most decorated side in the country: twenty-one league championships, the latest run unbroken since 2019, sit alongside seventeen Emir Cups. Much of that weight was added during a second golden age that ran through the 2000s and 2010s.

The club's older history is bound up with the national team that reached the round of 16 at the 1982 World Cup — a squad built largely around its own players, among them Waleed Jasem Mubarak, a youth product who had already won the Asian Cup with Kuwait in 1980. Four decades later the recruitment reached further: John Obi Mikel, once Nigeria's captain and a Chelsea midfielder, signed in 2021.

Domestically the derby that matters most is against Al-Qadsia SC; a second, against Al Arabi SC and Kazma SC, is fought as the Kuwait City Derby. Beyond football, teams carrying the yellow and black also compete in handball, basketball and volleyball.

In continental competition, Al Kuwait was the first Kuwaiti club to win an Asian title, beating Syria's Al-Karamah 2-1 in the 2009 AFC Cup final, then adding two more AFC Cups in 2012 and 2013. That run resumed in 2025-26, when the club won the AFC Challenge League, beating Cambodia's Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng 4-3 after extra time — a title it now carries into a domestic season it enters as reigning champion in every major competition at home.
