Appenzell Women

Appenzell sits in the foothills below the Alpstein, a town small enough that its sports scene runs largely through one club, the Turnverein Appenzell. Handball there dates to 1970, when a group from the club's active-sports section decided the town needed its own department for the game, and a women's youth section followed in 1982.

For most of that history the honours board belonged to others — a men's fourth-tier title in 1979, a youth cup won in 1988 — while the women's team built its record more quietly. That changed with promotion into the 1. Liga, the second tier of Swiss women's handball, in the 2024/2025 season.

The team, known by the shorthand TVA, trains and plays under head coach Dano Waldburger, with goalkeeper Jael Fässler among the current squad. Their ground is the Sporthalle Wühre, built to hold 1,284, though a typical league weekend there draws closer to 300 or 600 through the doors.
