Emsdetten is a small town in the Münsterland, and for well over a century its identity on a handball court has belonged to one club run out of the Ems-Halle. Turnverein Emsdetten grew out of a general sports association founded in 1898, and the handball department picked itself back up in the years just after the Second World War, long before anyone in the town could have imagined a Bundesliga fixture list with TVE's name on it.

For most of its life the club built itself up gradually rather than in bursts. Promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in 1985, under coach Franz-Josef "Buba" Jönsthövel, opened a run at the second tier that would stretch on for decades. A second-place finish in the 2009/10 season, ending in a promotion-round defeat to TSV Dormagen, showed how close TVE kept coming without quite breaking through. The breakthrough arrived on 8 May 2013, a 29:28 win over SG BBM Bietigheim that sent Emsdetten into the 1. Handball-Bundesliga for the first time. The stay lasted one season; TVE finished eighteenth and went straight back down, but the town had its year among the country's elite.

The club's cup record has one real high point, a run to the DHB-Pokal semi-finals in 1983, though it never turned that or the top-flight season into a trophy. After thirty-six straight years somewhere in the professional handball pyramid, relegation to the 3. Liga in 2022 broke the sequence. TVE built its way back rather than sitting still, and promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in 2026 put it back among the clubs it had shared a division with for so long. Players such as Yannick Terhaer, on the right wing since 2001, have stayed through the club's ups and downs, while the derby against ASV Hamm-Westfalen still draws the Ems-Halle's 2,200 seats close to full.
