Handball did not arrive at Turnverein Großwallstadt until 1925, decades after the gymnastics society itself had formed in the village near Elsenfeld in 1888. Between 1978 and 1990 TV Großwallstadt won the German championship six times, a run that also produced back-to-back European Cup titles in 1979 and 1980 and, later, the EHF Cup in 1984 and the EHF European Cup in 2000.

That standing did not survive the club intact. Financial trouble brought insolvency, the loss of the Bundesliga licence, and a drop to the third tier; the handball operation was hived off into its own company in 2015 to keep the club alive. It climbed back to the 2. Bundesliga in 2018 and reached the top flight again in 2021, only to go straight back down the following year. Jens Tiedtke, once a player for the club, was among those who worked to put the team back together after the insolvency.

Matches are still played at the Untermainhalle in Elsenfeld, though the bigger occasions — the derby against TV Hüttenberg in particular — sometimes move to Frankfurt's Süwag Energie Arena, and the Franconian meetings with HSC 2000 Coburg carry their own name, the Franken-Derby.

Of the players who wore the blue and white, it is the goalkeeper Andreas Wolff whose name travelled furthest, his time at Großwallstadt part of a career that carried him into the German national side.
