In Bergen, the fixture that matters most is the "byderby" against Tertnes HåndballElite, with Åsane IL Håndball as the other rival crossing the city map. Fana has never lifted the Norwegian Handball Cup or the league title, even after reaching the top flight, the REMA 1000-ligaen, in 2018.

What the club has built instead runs through its academy. Christine Karlsen Alver came through that system and stands as the club's all-time top scorer, a mark she backed up by topping the league's scoring charts in 2021/2022.

The promotion of 2018 opened the door to Europe, and Fana took it in 2022/23, playing in the EHF European League for the first time.

Fana Idrettslag itself dates back to 1920, with the handball section carrying that founding date as one department of the wider sports club.

517 goals: Karlsen Alver's tally still stands as the number every scorer at the club is measured against.
