The second string in Alkmaar exists to move footballers along that road.

That older arrangement lasted from 2001/02 until the Dutch federation opened the second tier to reserve sides. Jong AZ took the Beloftendivisie B title in 2012/13 and stepped into the Eerste Divisie the following season. A reserve team cannot enter the play-offs for the Eredivisie and cannot compete for the KNVB Cup, so the table position at the end of a season is a record of how the season went.

Home matches are played away from the AFAS Stadion, at the training ground in Wijdewormer, north of Alkmaar — a complex better known locally as De Kalverhoek.

The fixture that draws an audience is the North Holland derby. Red, white and black are the colours; the nickname belongs to the senior club.
