Newton Heath LYR, founded in 1878, became Manchester United in 1902, and the reserve set-up that grew out of that early history was formally reorganised into the current U21s in 2012. The team plays its league fixtures at Leigh Sports Village, a 12,000-capacity ground it shares with Manchester United Women, though Premier League rules oblige it to stage at least three matches a season at Old Trafford.
