Games against them are known together as the Derby HaShapela.

The club was founded in 1980 by Meni Weitzman and Yossi Gava. Locally it is called "The Oranges", after its orange and blue colours. Its handball stayed in the lower divisions for 51 years. In 2019 Nes Tziona reached the Israeli Handball Premier League (Ligat Winner), having come up from League A' within two years.

In 2017-18, a season before promotion, Nes Tziona reached the semi-finals and lost to Maccabi Rishon LeZion, one of its own derby opponents. In 2020-21, it reached the quarter-finals and lost to Maccidi Dimona.

The team plays in the Lev HaMoshava Sports Hall, which has 800 permanent seats. Temporary stands raise that to 1,200. Rui Rolo of Portugal has been among its recent players, and the goalkeepers Or Kanani and Alon Rotzvi have also played for the club.

Nes Tziona has not yet won a league title or the State Cup.
