Six Soviet titles between 1981 and 1989 came with three European crowns still attached to the same roster, and for a stretch in the late 1980s SKA Minsk simply had no equal on the continent: the EHF Champions Cup in 1987, 1989 and 1990, the Cup Winners' Cup in 1983 and 1988, the Super Cup in 1990. That run grew out of the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute, where Vitaly Dobrovolsky put together a team called Politekhnik in 1960 and took the first Belarusian SSR championship within a year. The 1976 switch to the Sports Club of the Army brought the name SKA Minsk and, with it, Spartak Mironovich, who took over as head coach and stayed for nearly forty years.

When the Soviet Union broke apart, the competition SKA Minsk had been measured against disappeared, and the club simply carried on winning what remained: ten straight Belarusian championships from 1993 to 2002. Nothing else came close in the country for that decade. Then the title stopped coming — twenty-three years passed before it returned in 2025.

The Baltic League, contested three years running from 2013 to 2015, and an EHF Challenge Cup in 2013 kept the club's name in continental draws long after the Soviet-era dominance had faded. Mironovich's eventual departure in 2016 passed the side to Igor Papruga, who ran it until 2023, when Dmitry Nikulenko took charge.

Home games are played at the Uruchye Sports Palace, known as much for its red-and-blue-clad "Army Men" as for the sound a full 3,000-seat house makes on cup nights. The 2025 championship arrived alongside a Super Cup, and this year's Belarusian Cup adds another line to a run of domestic trophies that has picked up pace again after the long gap.
