CIS-Halle
Solothurn, Switzerland
The CIS-Halle in Solothurn presents a rather different picture from the grand arenas that host international championships. Heinz Isler’s concrete shell stands in the Weststadt district, its structure a testament to the engineer’s work, though the building has clearly seen better days.
The hall suffers from persistent problems. The natural wooden floor is uneven and wavy, and water infiltrates through the ceiling during rain.
Despite its condition, the CIS-Halle still serves Solothurn. It also served a different purpose during the pandemic, when the Cantonal Council held an outdoor session on the grounds outside the hall.
The building belongs to the city, which sold it to a construction firm in 2018. The city’s need for 1,200 spectator seats for a new venue suggests that the old shell has outlived its purpose.
