Framohallen

The hall at Allestadveien 16 sits in the Varden area. Fyllingen Idrettslag owns the place, and they have kept it running since the spring of 1998. The original municipal hall was too small, so the club dug in and commissioned a new space.

Inside, the parquet floor is worn smooth by decades of sliding feet. The seating is sparse, holding 1,800 souls, a number that feels modest for a venue that once hosted a Norway versus Brazil match. The crowd roared them on during that encounter, a memory that sits heavier than the routine league matches played here now.

The elite men’s team, Bergen Håndball, packed their bags and moved to Haukelandshallen after breaking away in 2022. The relationship has soured, leaving Framohallen to serve the lower tiers and the club’s broader identity. It remains a functional shell, hosting the third semi-final of Melodi Grand Prix in 2006, a moment that briefly lifted the building above its sporting purpose. Christine Guldbrandsen and Tor Endresen performed there, a detail that feels disconnected from the sweat and noise of the handball courts.

The domain framohallen.no is parked, a digital ghost of a place that still operates via phone and email. There is no grand spectacle here, only the steady rhythm of training sessions and the occasional cup tie. The architect, Ulf Røstøen, drew plans that prioritized function over form, and the result is a building that does not try to impress. It is simply where the game is played, far from the glare of the elite stage.
