Hong Kong Coliseum
Hung Hom, Hong Kong
The arena floor is concrete (混凝土地面), measuring 42m × 42m. It covers a total area of 1,680 square meters and can withstand a pressure of 1,800 kg/m². Depending on the event type, this concrete floor gets covered with wooden flooring or synthetic mats. The venue holds 10,400 fixed seats, with additional capacity for standing areas bringing the total to 12,500. That makes it the second largest indoor facility in Hong Kong.
A major renovation completed in 2008-2009 cost HK$168.6 million in preparation for the 5th East Asian Games. This work included the replacement of all approximately 10,500 fixed seats at the performance venue. The venue is operated by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD).
What remains constant is the space itself. It is a landmark in the Yau Tsim Mong District, situated near Hung Hom station. The original construction cost HK$140 million, and it was officially inaugurated on April 27, 1983, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Urban Council. The building stands as a functional container for sport and culture, its concrete base ready for whatever surface is laid upon it.
