Kai Tak Arena
Hong Kong, Hong Kong
Formerly: Kai Tak Main Arena, Kai Tak Sports Park Arena, Kai Tak Sports & Entertainment Arena
The Kai Tak Arena is an indoor venue built in the shadow of the old airport runway, becoming part of a wider complex that opened in 2025. The architecture is defined by its pillar-free design, leaving an unbroken span of 80m by 100m for the floor. Up to 80% of the seating is retractable or removable, a system designed to switch the space between a sports hall and a concert venue rather than a single-purpose arena. The main floor holds 500 spectators, while the surrounding tiered seating can accommodate 10,000 people in total.
Its location is distinct from older Hong Kong venues. Kai Tak Arena sits on the site of the former Kai Tak Airport, which closed in 1998, replacing decades of aviation history with modern infrastructure. The complex also includes the Kai Tak Stadium and the Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground, creating a cluster of facilities that are rare in the city. The arena has already hosted international fixtures, including the World Snooker Grand Prix and the 2025 FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League. Local teams have also utilised the space; the Hong Kong Bulls basketball team were granted temporary use for playoff matches after their regular home was deemed insufficient by the Chinese Basketball Association.
The building is engineered for sustainability, holding provisional Platinum BEAM Plus rating and Gold LEED pre-certification. Construction was managed by Hip Hing Engineering with architectural design by Populous and engineering consultancy by Arup. The project was developed by Kai Tak Sports Park Limited, a subsidiary of New World Development and NWS Holdings. The total cost for the entire complex was HK$30 billion. The arena officially opened to the public on March 1, 2025, with an opening ceremony held at the main stadium attended by 33,600 spectators.
