In August 2022 Hong Kong beat opposition it had never troubled before to lift the AVC Nations Cup. The run gave the Volleyball Association of Hong Kong, China something it had not had in seven decades of running the game locally: a team good enough to be talked about outside its own region.

That regional context matters more than most. Hong Kong's sharpest rivalry is not international but local, against Guangdong in the Sheng-Gang-Ao Cup, contested with Macau.

Yu Ying-chi captains the side, with Chim Wing-lam and Shum Lam at the front as spikers and Fong Ka-yi and Yim Wing-ni blocking behind them.

Kai Tak Arena, seating 10,000, became the team's main stage for events such as the Nations League in 2025, taking over from the Hong Kong Coliseum, which held 2,500 more but sat further from the redeveloped Kai Tak waterfront that now anchors much of Hong Kong's sport.

The governing body traces back to 1951, when it organised the game under a different name, the Kowloon and Hong Kong Volleyball Association, before adopting its current title in 2023 — a name change that closed out over seventy years under the old one.
