Nepal's women land at every South Asian Games with the same expectation on them now: a medal, and probably not bronze.

That rivalry took a new shape on 5 August 2024, when Nepal beat India 3-2 in the CAVA Nations League — the first win over India in the team's history. India got the better of them in the final that followed, but the result had already changed something: a fixture Nepal used to enter hoping to keep the score respectable is now one they can win.

Aruna Shahi has been at the centre of that shift. A setter who debuted in 2013 and has captained the side since 2019, she ran the team through its silver at the 2019 South Asian Games in Kathmandu, the gold at the AVC Senior Women's Central Zone Championship that same year, and the 2024 Nations League run. The Central Zone title itself was defended in 2021 against Uzbekistan, giving Nepal back-to-back wins in a competition they had not previously owned.

Progress elsewhere has been slower and more uneven — a bronze at the 2023 CAVA Challenge Cup, a seventh-place finish at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou after grinding past Mongolia 3-2 in the classification match, a step up from 15th four years earlier. None of it carries the weight of the South Asian Games, where Nepal first turned up in 1999 and walked away with bronze on home ground in Kathmandu — a modest start, against the standard the team now holds itself to, but the one everything since has been measured against.
