Bulgantamir Sergelenbaatar has worn the captain's armband for the Mongolia women's national volleyball team since 2016, an outside hitter whose form for the domestic side Enacoree Monty earned her the MVP award in the 2019 Mongolian National League. Around her the national side has spent most of its recent history climbing rather than arriving: an 11th-place finish at the Asian Women's Volleyball Championship in 2015 remains its high point there, with 14th in 2013 and 12th in 2023 either side of it. At the Asian Games the reference point sits further back, a sixth place from 1994 that later campaigns — eighth in 2006 and 2010, twelfth in 2022 — have not matched.

The team's clearest silverware came in a narrower contest. At the Eastern Asian Volleyball Championship, a zonal event rather than the full continental one, Mongolia took silver in 2000 and added bronze in 2008, against opponents such as Chinese Taipei who recur in that competition. Kazakhstan has become the more frequent test in recent years, meeting Mongolia in the AVC Women's Cup and in Asian Games qualifiers scheduled into 2025 and 2026, while Vietnam and Uzbekistan appear regularly in the AVC Challenge Cup. None of these has hardened into a fixture spoken of as a derby.

Ts. Shoovdor shaped much of the team's early identity, first as a player in the 1960 and 1965 squads and later across three spells in charge, from 1969 to 1973, 1978 to 1983 and again in 1993–94 — the years bridging that first Asian Games run. The side plays its home matches at the Buyant Ukhaa Sport Palace in Ulaanbaatar, built to hold just over 5,000. It traces back to 1958, a year after the Mongolian Volleyball Association joined the international federation, when Ts. Shagdar took the first squad, captained by Ts. Lkhamjav, onto the court.
