Since 2022 Thailand have carried the "Smiling Assassins" tag into arenas well beyond the region that made it: a round of 16 at the 2025 World Championship, and, after winning the 2026 Asian Championship, an Olympic qualification.

The Thailand Volleyball Association was founded on 11 February 1959 and joined the FIVB the same day; the national team has treated the SEA Games as its own property since. That rivalry has carried the sharpest edge in Southeast Asian volleyball for years.

The team's identity was built by the so-called Fab Six, whose run through the 2000s and 2010s turned Thailand from a regional power into an Asian one: the Asian Championship in 2009 and 2013, the Asian Cup in 2012, an Asian Games silver in 2018. Pleumjit Thinkaow and Wilavan Apinyapong captained sides built around that generation's outside hitters, and much of what the team is now recognised for outside Thailand traces back to those years.

Home matches at the Indoor Stadium Huamark in Bangkok draw crowds that fill most of its 10,000 seats when the visitors are Vietnam or another Asian Championship contender. The next assignment is the one the team has never faced before: an Olympic tournament, rather than another SEA Games final it is already expected to win.
