Montreal, 1976. South Korea beat Hungary 3-1 for bronze, the country's first Olympic medal in any team sport, and volleyball became the game people pointed to first. The run to that podium ran through a squad built around Yu Kyung-hwa, Yu Jung-hye and Lee Soon-bok, coached by Lee Kyo-so, and the medal stood alone for decades.

London 2012 belonged to Kim Yeon-koung. She scored 207 points across the tournament, an Olympic record, and was named the competition's MVP despite South Korea finishing fourth. She had debuted with the side in 2005 and stayed until 2021, becoming its captain and all-time leading scorer, and by the time she retired from international play the team had also picked up its habit of losing Asian Championship finals: seven silvers, ten bronzes, never gold, against Japan more often than not.

Japan is the fixture that matters most, still called simply the Korea-Japan match. The Korea Volleyball Association, formed in 1946 and admitted to the FIVB in 1959, sent the team to its first tournament at the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta, where it took silver on debut.

The players train together at the Jincheon National Training Center and wear navy blue and red. For the games that matter most they fill Jamsil Arena in Seoul, 11,069 seats.
