About

The Women's Indoor Volleyball tournament at the Southeast Asian Games is a biennial medal event organized by the Southeast Asian Games Federation. It operates under the technical oversight of the Federation of Southeast Asian Volleyball Associations and has been contested since 1977. Unlike domestic club competitions, this tournament involves national teams from ASEAN member nations, with no promotion or relegation system in place. All eligible countries are invited to participate, creating a direct comparison of regional strength without the filter of league structures.

Thailand stands as the dominant force in this history. The national team has won 17 gold medals as of the 2025 SEA Games in Bangkok. This includes a streak of 15 consecutive titles spanning from 1995 to 2025. The 2025 final saw Thailand defeat Vietnam 3-2. Indonesia secured the silver medal, while the Philippines took bronze after beating Vietnam 3-1. These results highlight the competitive hierarchy within the region, where one side consistently outperforms others over decades. The format typically divides teams into two groups for a round-robin preliminary stage. This is followed by a Final Four knockout bracket comprising semifinal, gold, and bronze medal matches, alongside consolation matches for lower placements. This structure ensures that every team plays multiple games before the decisive knockout phase determines the medalists. The tournament is distinct from the AVC Women's Continental Championship, which serves as a qualifier for global events, and the SEA V Cup, an annual invitational. While it lacks the global qualification prestige of Asian championships, it remains the premier regional benchmark for Southeast Asian national teams. The 1999 edition is a notable absence where volleyball was not held.
