Jakarta hosts most of the team's home fixtures now, and the Jakarta International Velodrome, a 3,500-capacity venue, has become the default stage for the SEA V League. The national side has no fixed ground of its own and moves between cities as tournaments dictate.

The federation, Persatuan Bola Voli Seluruh Indonesia, was formed on 22 January 1955 and took the country into the FIVB three years later, but the women's team's own record starts later, with a bronze medal at the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta. There, Indonesia beat the Philippines 3–2 in the 1983 final for their only gold, and have added seven silvers and a long run of bronzes since, most recently in 2025.

The captain, Megawati Hangestri Pertiwi, has become the team's most recognised name. Red and white, the colours of the flag, give the side its everyday nickname, Tim Merah Putih, alongside the more formal Tim Garuda Pertiwi.

Against Thailand and Vietnam, matches carry the weight of the region's main rivalry, without ever being given a name of their own. At the Asian Championship, where Southeast Asian rivals have occasionally broken through to medals, Indonesia's best finish remains fifth, set in 1979 and not matched since; the 2026 edition ended in the quarter-finals.
