Zhu Ting lifted the World Grand Prix trophy in 2003, and by 2016 she was named the most valuable player of the Rio Olympics as the team's captain and outside hitter, carrying a shirt once worn by Lang Ping, the player who gave the side its nickname, "Iron Hammer," in the 1980s and who later returned to coach it between 2013 and 2016 and again from 2019 to 2021.
The team traces back to 1956, and the run to the top came in stages: gold at the 1981 World Cup in Japan, then the World Championship itself in 1982 and 1986, then the first Olympic gold in Los Angeles in 1984. Rio in 2016 added a third, either side of a silver in Atlanta in 1996 and a bronze in Seoul in 1988.
No single arena belongs to the side the way a home ground belongs to a club side; matches move between Beijing, Tianjin, Ningbo and Macau, while Zhangzhou, in Fujian province, has served as the training base where squads have prepared between tournaments.
Japan has been the opponent that mattered most across that history, a rivalry sharpened by the 1981 World Cup final and renewed in the 2012 Olympic quarter-final. Within Asia the record is close to total: thirteen continental championship titles between 1979 and 2015, and Asian Games gold as recently as 2022. The Volleyball Nations League title is the one absent from the collection.
What is remembered alongside the medals is a phrase, the "Women's Volleyball Spirit," attached to the team since the 1980s and still invoked whenever a later generation, coached by Lang Ping or captained by Zhu Ting, has had to come back from a set down.
