Sparbanken Skåne Arena
Lund, Sweden
Formerly: Färs & Frosta Sparbank Arena, Färs och Frosta Sparbank Arena
The Sparbanken Skåne Arena does not look like the sports grounds you find in the older parts of Lund. It sits out on the edge of the Klostergården district, standing apart from the brick buildings nearby. Its presence is defined by that exterior . The approach is wide and open, suggesting the land was laid out for function rather than charm.
Inside, the space is bright and utilitarian. The stands rise steeply from the edges, filling the space without overwhelming it. You see the players more clearly here , the distance short enough to hear the squeak of trainers on the court.
The venue opened in 2008, stepping into a city where the older football grounds still hold the weight of history, while this hall serves the rapid, indoor games of handball and basketball. It has hosted the world’s largest indoor handball tournament, the Lundaspelen, filling these seats with thousands of spectators who come to watch the finals in December. The atmosphere is tighter, the acoustics sharper. When a ball hits the backboard, the sound carries , and the crowd reacts in a smaller, more immediate circle than you would find in an open-air stadium.
