About

The Norwegian ice hockey league has operated under various names since its inception in 1934. It stands as the premier division for the sport within the country, sitting directly above the 1. divisjon. Currently named EliteHockey Ligaen, the competition has also been known as Fjordkraftligaen and GET-ligaen. The structure became independent from direct administration by the Norwegian Ice Hockey Association (NIHF) in 1990 when top clubs formed the Eliteserien. The competition features ten teams during the regular season. Each side plays a double round-robin schedule, resulting in 45 games per club. Scoring follows the IIHF three-point system, where a regulation win awards three points, while overtime or shootout victories and defeats yield two and one point respectively. The conclusion of the regular season determines the next phase of play. The top eight teams progress to the playoffs, which consist of best-of-seven series through the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals. Meanwhile, the bottom two teams face a relegation qualification round against the leading pair from the second tier. This four-team double round-robin contest sees the top two finishers promoted to the EliteHockey Ligaen for the following campaign. Vålerenga Ishockey holds the record for the most titles with 26 national championships. Storhamar Hockey claimed the 2023–24 title after defeating Vålerenga 4–1 in the final series. The league enforces a roster rule requiring at least 12 Norwegian players, a measure not present in the Swedish Hockey League. There is no formal salary cap, though a minimum salary floor exists.

EliteHockey Ligaen is the top tier of Norwegian ice hockey, established in 1934. The league comprises ten clubs playing a 45-game double round-robin schedule. The top eight teams advance to best-of-seven playoff series, while the bottom two enter a relegation qualification against the 1. divisjon leaders. Vålerenga Ishockey holds the record with 26 championships.
