The IIHF World Championship Division II Group B operates as the sixth tier of the international men’s ice hockey structure. Situated below Division II Group A and above Division III Group A, the competition provides a critical pathway for nations developing their infrastructure. Administered by the International Ice Hockey Federation, the format was established in 2001, replacing a previous Pool C structure. The current system, refined in 2012, dictates strict movement between levels to maintain competitive balance.
The tournament features six teams competing in a round-robin format. The primary objective for participants is promotion to the higher tier, which is awarded to the winner. Conversely, the last-place team faces relegation to Division III Group A. This high-stakes environment distinguishes the group from other developmental levels, where gaps in skill and resources among participants are often more pronounced. The current participants include Bulgaria, Chinese Taipei, Iceland, Israel, Kyrgyzstan, and New Zealand.
Historical context highlights the shifting power dynamics within this specific group. Spain historically holds the record for success with six titles between 2005 and 2014, demonstrating a period of dominance. Turkey follows with four victories. Recent outcomes show a change in leadership, with Belgium winning the 2024 edition hosted in Sofia, Bulgaria, and Israel securing the 2026 title in the same location. These results indicate that while traditional powers like Spain once led, newer contenders are establishing themselves at this level. The competition serves as a vital developmental stage for emerging hockey nations, offering a structured route for growth and international exposure.
