The IIHF Women's Ice Hockey World Championship Division III B operates as the seventh tier of the international women's competition hierarchy. It sits directly below Division III A and above Division IV, serving as a critical developmental platform for emerging nations. The structure diverges from domestic leagues by hosting an annual international tournament with rotating venue responsibilities rather than a fixed geographical base.

The current two-group configuration, comprising Group A and Group B, was implemented in 2022. This structural change split the previous single Division III entity, which had operated since its initial inception in 2003. The reform aimed to accommodate the growing number of participating nations within the federation's framework. Prior to this division, the 2020 edition marked the final single-group tournament before the reorganisation. The format relies on a single round-robin league system where each team faces every opponent once. Points accumulated during these matches determine the final standings without any knockout stages. Strict promotion and relegation rules govern movement between tiers. The group winner advances to Division III A, while the team finishing at the bottom is relegated to Division IV. The participating field typically contains five or six teams.

Recent results highlight the competitive shifting of power in this tier. Thailand secured the title in the 2024 edition, earning promotion to the higher division. Bulgaria claimed victory in the subsequent 2025 tournament. Estonia hosted the 2022 Group B tournament, while also preparing to host the 2026 edition. The 2024 and 2026 competitions featured a shared lineup including Bosnia & Herzegovina, Estonia, Israel, Singapore, and Thailand.
