The **IIHF World U20 Championship** stands as the premier international under-20 ice hockey tournament. Organised by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the event represents the highest level of junior competition globally. While the first unofficial tournament occurred in 1974, the official IIHF-sanctioned championship began in 1977.
The Top Division features ten national teams competing in a structured format. The season starts with a round-robin group stage split into two groups of five. The best teams from these groups advance to single-elimination playoffs, comprising quarterfinals, semifinals and medal games, to decide the champion. Promotion and relegation connect this tier to Division I Group A. The lowest-placed team in the Top Division is relegated, while the winner of Division I Group A secures promotion.
Canada leads the historical standings with twenty gold medals. The Soviet Union, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States combined have won thirteen titles, followed by the United States with seven. In the 2026 tournament, Sweden claimed the title after defeating Czechia in the final. The previous year, the United States secured the championship.
The tournament has evolved since its inception. Originally featuring eight teams, the field expanded to ten in 1996. The competition operates independently of national league pyramids, serving exclusively as the top tier for international junior play. It remains distinct from the senior IIHF World Championship and the under-18 version of the event. One notable incident in history involved the 1987 final between Canada and the Soviet Union, which ended in a brawl known as the "Punch-up in Piestany." The result was declared null and void, awarding gold to Finland.
