About

The IIHF World U20 Championship Division I Group B sits at the third tier of the international pyramid for men’s under-20 national teams. Organised by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the tournament features six teams competing in a round-robin format. The competition was established as a distinct entity in 2012 following a restructuring that split the single Division I pool into two groups. Before this change, the event operated under different names, including Division I from 2001 to 2011 and the B-series from 1979 to 2000.

The structure ensures strict movement between levels. The winner gains promotion to Division I Group A, while the team finishing last is relegated to Division II Group A. Tie-breaking procedures follow a specific hierarchy. Points take precedence, followed by head-to-head results within the tied group. If the tie persists, goal difference and goals scored in those matches are considered. Should the teams remain level, the overall tournament goal difference is evaluated, followed by penalty minutes and, ultimately, a drawing of lots.

In the most recent season, Ukraine secured the top spot and earned promotion. The participating nations include Estonia, Italy, Japan, Poland, South Korea and Ukraine. The tournament operates annually, distinguishing it from domestic league structures by featuring national federations rather than club sides. Official details and results are available on the IIHF website, specifically under the World Junior Championship section. The competition serves as a critical pathway for developing talent within the global ice hockey landscape, providing a competitive environment for emerging players on the international stage.
