Cavalry moved further clear at the summit of the Canadian Premier League with a 3-1 victory over Halifax Wanderers on Sunday evening. The visitors, already sitting top of the table with 43 points from 19 games, took control through early goals and held firm despite a late penalty consolation for the hosts. Halifax remain sixth with 20 points from 20 matches, a gap that now feels wider than before.
Nathaniel Edwards opened the scoring just before half-time with a 48th-minute strike, then Tobias Warschewski doubled the advantage from close range in the 64th. Sergio Camargo added a third in the 75th minute before I. Johnston converted a late penalty in stoppage time. Halifax had seen a penalty cancelled by VAR in the 59th minute, which shifted the momentum away from them at a crucial moment.
Halifax dominated possession at 59 per cent and created more attacks — 38 to 23 — but Cavalry were sharper in front of goal. The visitors registered five shots on target with 56 per cent accuracy, while the hosts managed only three shots on target from 27 per cent accuracy. Cavalry created four big chances compared to one for Halifax, and it showed on the scoreboard.
The result extends Cavalry's strong recent run. They have won four of their last five matches, including victories over Vancouver and Atletico Ottawa, while Halifax lost three of their last five outings. The hosts came from a 1-0 win against Vancouver but could not replicate that form in this fixture.
Cavalry now sit 23 points clear of Halifax with one game remaining in the group stage. The visitors have lost only twice this season and look well placed to finish top. Halifax face a difficult task to climb out of the lower half of the table and will need to find consistency across all areas of the pitch.
