Nikko Ice Bucks Rout Kobe Stars in Asian Hockey League
Nikko Ice Bucks took a comprehensive 5:1 victory over Kobe Stars in the Asian Hockey League on Friday evening. The away side made no mistake against a hosts' side that had been searching for any sign of life. And here's the thing — it was exactly what the form suggested would happen.
Kobe had gone four matches without a point, losing each time. They had dropped games to Tohoku Free Blades and Yokohama Grizzlies in quick succession. Nikko, meanwhile, sat third despite having played one more fixture, carrying three wins into the contest.
We had backed the visitors at 69 per cent confidence before kickoff, and the result vindicated that call. Nikko worked their chances and punished Kobe's defensive errors with clinical efficiency. To be fair, the hosts offered very little in attack all evening.
The standings tell a story of two teams finding their feet in different ways. Kobe remain sixth with zero points from four games — a difficult start. Nikko sit third after five matches, three victories and two defeats, but still zero on the board. The new point system means the table tells only half the story.
Recent results showed both sides struggling, but Nikko had found a rhythm against Anyang Halla and Hokkaido Red Eagles. Kobe's losses to the same opponents were heavier and more frequent. The gap between them was evident in the final scoreline.
Five goals against one — that is the margin Nikko built and held. The hosts managed only a single response, but it came too late to change the complexion of the game. Nikko extend their winning habit and leave Kobe searching for answers.
The visitors are now closing in on a deal for something better than where they started. Kobe have four losses and nothing to show for it. By then, this match will be remembered as a turning point for different reasons.
