Liberec Bili Tigrs delivered a comprehensive 5:0 victory over Karlovy Vary in the Extraliga on Thursday evening. The home side dominated from start to finish, turning a match against third place into a statement performance. And here's the thing — we had backed the visitors at 50 per cent confidence. That prediction didn't materialise, and frankly the game showed us why.
Karlovy Vary arrived with five wins from seven matches, sitting comfortably in third place. Bili Tigrs were eighth with three wins from eight games, but their recent form told a different story. They'd won four of their last five outings, including a 3:2 victory over Frolunda just three days prior. To be fair, nobody expected this kind of dismantling.
The home side went for the jugular early and never let up. Karlovy Vary seemed to sit deep and soak it up, but that approach only invited pressure. Things came to a head when Bili Tigrs began stringing goals together, leaving the away side flat-footed and unable to recover. By then the match had already slipped away.
What's interesting is the contrast in trajectories. Karlovy Vary had beaten Plzen 4:1 and Vitkovice 3:0 on their last two outings, while also holding Sparta Prague 1:0. That run of results made them favourites on paper. But paper doesn't account for momentum, and Bili Tigrs had found theirs.
The result means Bili Tigrs move off the bottom of the table, while Karlovy Vary's third-place position remains intact despite the defeat. Two losses from seven games still puts them ahead of most of the league. The gap between the sides isn't as wide as the scoreline suggests — yet.
By then, the prediction we made looked like a textbook example of reading form too literally. Sometimes the team that's won more games doesn't win the game. Bili Tigrs proved that point emphatically on Thursday.
