Zeev Buium signs eight-year extension with Canucks

Zeev Buium has signed an eight-year extension with the Vancouver Canucks worth $75 million, at an average annual value of $9.38 million.

The new deal takes effect from the 2027/28 season. The 20-year-old defenceman is still playing out his entry-level contract this term, on a salary of $966,500.

Buium joined the Canucks in a mid-season trade that sent Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild, the club that had drafted him 12th overall in 2024. This season he has played 45 games for Vancouver, with 3 goals and 9 assists, finishing at minus-21. Across his NHL career he has 26 points in 76 games. He won gold with the United States at last year's World Championship.

The extension lands two days after the desk covered another Canucks story — forward Ilya Safonov's adjustment to grocery prices in Vancouver — continuing a run of news out of the club this week.

Locking up a 20-year-old blueliner for eight years, before he has even finished his rookie deal, signals that Vancouver see Buium as part of the core they intend to build around long after Hughes's departure.
