Toronto's No. 1 draft pick will stay with team-mate John Tavares, who says a family environment will help the 18-year-old handle the spotlight.
Gavin McDavid — no, Gavin McKenna — will live with team-mate John Tavares during his rookie NHL season in Toronto. Tavares, 35, went first overall to the New York Islanders at the 2009 draft; McKenna, 18, went first overall this year, and both now wear the Maple Leafs jersey.
"I want him to enjoy being in Toronto, live out his dream, play in the NHL and have the chance to perform in front of incredible fans who are going to love him and support him. And when things get tough for him at times, when he's going through something, he'll be able to deal with it in a family environment. His situation coming in is definitely different from mine. That's exactly why I wanted to offer him this option even more. Just having the chance to come home and switch off from all that attention can be really useful for an 18-year-old kid from a small town," said Tavares.
Tavares and his wife, Erin, have three children — two sons and a daughter.
