Kamensky: KHL Discussing Pre-Match Shootouts
KHL vice-president Valery Kamensky says a plan to hold shootouts before matches is only under discussion, meant to boost the game's entertainment value.
The KHL is weighing a proposal to hold shootout series before matches begin, its vice-president for development Valery Kamensky has said.
"This is only a discussion, not a decision," Kamensky said. "We are looking at ways to improve the game, to make it more of a spectacle. Everyone puts forward their own proposals. And all of it will be discussed with the clubs, with the club management."
Asked how a pre-match shootout might actually make the game more of a spectacle, Kamensky said that was a question for the clubs. "In principle, if it works to the good of the fans, the spectators and the teams, why not? Why not try it? We can try it at any time, and we can cancel it at any time. There are pre-season games for exactly this, so everyone puts forward a proposal."
Pressed on whether, as a former player himself, he found it absurd to settle a possible winner before the match has even started, Kamensky pushed back. "We have to try things. Why not? We are not bringing it in on the principle of saying it and doing it. We will discuss it and watch the reaction — the clubs' reaction, the players' reaction, everyone's reaction. If everyone agrees to it, I think it will only do good. Shootouts are always interesting. We just need to consult with everyone."
The league has moved on shootout format before. Asked why, if fans like shootouts, the KHL cut the round count from five to three, Kamensky said the change was agreed with the clubs to stop matches running long. "A match usually lasts two hours, and by the end people are tired. Fewer shootout rounds means each one carries more weight," he said.
