Washington's front office says Ovechkin remains focused on the season, calling him a longtime pillar of the club and community despite the political controversy.
A club representative addressed the matter in comments carried by Associated Press.
"Alexander Ovechkin is a citizen of Russia. In the off-season, he lives in Moscow with his family, and he will live there after his career ends. As the longest-tenured athlete on the Washington roster and an important figure in the local community, he — like us — is focused on the upcoming season and on the contribution he continues to make, both on the ice and in the life of our city," the Capitals representative said.
