Mathew Barzal to Miss Islanders Training Camp
The Islanders forward will be off the ice for about two weeks due to a flare-up of a previous injury, GM Mathieu Darche says he could still play the opener.
"Mathew Barzal will not be on the ice for the next two weeks due to a flare-up of an old injury. He is working hard toward a full recovery. Mathew, more than anyone, wants to get his body into a condition that allows him to be at his best on the ice. We expect him to continue his recovery and return to the lineup as soon as possible," the club said in a statement.
General manager Mathieu Darche left the 1 October opener on the table.
"The timeline could drop below two weeks. Can we say 12, 13 or 10 days? We've simply set a two-week target. He still has a chance to play in the opening game of the season. Is his involvement in that first game guaranteed? No," Darche said.
Barzal, who scored 72 points (19 goals, 53 assists) in 81 games last season, was the Islanders' leading scorer.
