Children from two Novosibirsk hockey teams, Avangard and Kristall, were taken to hospital in Irkutsk with signs of poisoning, the regional branch of the Investigative Committee (SK) said on 20 September.
The committee said in a statement on the Max messenger: "According to preliminary data, a group of underage athletes who arrived from the city of Novosibirsk to take part in competitions sought medical help with signs of an intestinal infection."
Investigators have opened a preliminary inquiry. They are determining what happened and why. A formal ruling will follow once the check is complete.
The statement did not say how many children were affected, what state they are in, or which competition the teams had travelled to play in.
