Ovechkin Out With Lower-Body Injury, Misses Capitals Preseason Game

Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin has a lower-body injury and will miss the preseason game against Philadelphia, according to reports citing a club statement.

He could return any day, and the club will monitor his condition before deciding whether he plays in the remaining preseason games later in the week.

"I'm not going to promise anything," Head coach Dan Bylsma told Tom Gulitti. He added: "We'll see how the situation develops this week."

Under the agreement between the NHL and the players' union, players with 100 or more regular-season games can appear in only two of the four preseason games.

The coming campaign will be Ovechkin's 22nd in the NHL. He signed a one-year extension with Washington in the summer and arrives as the league's all-time leading regular-season goalscorer, with 929.
