Tretiak and Fetisov Among Ex-Athletes Elected to Duma
Olympic hockey legends Vladislav Tretiak and Vyacheslav Fetisov join Rodnina, Valuev, Karpov and other former athletes as deputies in Russia's ninth State Duma.
Vladislav Tretiak and Vyacheslav Fetisov, both Olympic champions on the ice, are among the sportspeople confirmed as deputies of the ninth State Duma, according to a list published on the Duma's website after the 20 September elections.
Tretiak, a three-time Olympic champion, and Fetisov, a two-time Olympic champion, sit alongside figures from other sports: figure skater Irina Rodnina, a three-time Olympic champion; boxer Nikolai Valuev, a world champion; speed skater Svetlana Zhurova, an Olympic champion; and chess player Anatoly Karpov, also a world champion. Cross-country skiers Alexander Legkov and Lyubov Yegorova, wrestlers Roman Vlasov, Artur Taymazov and Tagir Khaibulaev, and Paralympic champions Rima Batalova and Sergei Burlakov complete the list of former athletes.
Sports administrators feature as well. Oleg Matytsin, the former Russian sports minister, heads the Duma committee on physical culture and sport. Deputy sports minister Alexander Nikitin, ski and snowboard federation head Dmitry Svishchev, former Khimki board member Roman Teryushkov, honorary Russian Olympic Committee president Alexander Zhukov, former Buryatia sports minister Vyacheslav Damdintsurunov and St Petersburg judo federation president Mikhail Rakhlin are also named.
The new Duma held its first sitting on 30 September. It has 450 seats in total.
