About the player
Colm Whelan started out at Thomastown United before joining the Waterford academy, and it was at Waterford that he made his senior bow, coming on in a League of Ireland First Division defeat to Cobh Ramblers. Appearances were scarce there — four in total, none of them a scoring one — and the club's First Division title in 2017 came without him having much of a hand in it.
The move that changed things came in 2020, when Whelan signed for UCD. By the time he left UCD he had 44 goals in all competitions, 37 of them in the league — numbers that took him to Derry City on a free transfer in 2023.
An ACL injury in only his third appearance of that season wrecked his campaign, and although he returned in 2024, he managed just a single goal in ten league outings. He did pick up a President of Ireland's Cup winner's medal during his time at the club. In November 2024, he joined Bohemians on a free transfer, signing a multi-year deal ahead of the new season.
At underage international level, Whelan has three caps for the Republic of Ireland Under-21s, with a goal against Luxembourg U21 in 2021 among them.
