Joel Sebastián Romero Hurtado made his first-team debut for América de Cali on 2 February 2025, in a Liga BetPlay Apertura match against Atlético Bucaramanga that ended 4-0 to his side. The midfielder had come through the club's youth academy, working his way up before that breakthrough appearance.
Romero settled into a role as a central midfielder, and across his time at América de Cali he made 31 appearances in all competitions, scoring once and setting up three further goals. The bulk of that workload came in the league, where he featured 30 times, split across two seasons. He also had a run in the Copa Sudamericana, adding six appearances in the continental competition, along with a single outing in the Copa Colombia.
His performances for the Colombian side earned him a call-up to the Colombia under-20 national team.
