About the player
Newell arrived at Peterborough United's academy from Birmingham City in 2009 and made his senior debut in April 2011. He was named Peterborough United Player of the Year for the 2014/15 season and won the League One play-offs with the club in 2012/13, having already lifted the EFL Trophy in 2013/14.
A move to Rotherham United in August 2015. He was named Rotherham United Player of the Year in both 2016/17 and 2017/18, and played a central part in the 2018 League One play-offs, scoring in the semi-final and setting up the winning goal in the final as Rotherham went up.
Newell joined Hibernian on a free transfer in June 2019 and extending his contract on several occasions. He was made captain for the 2024/25 season and was named Hibernian Player of the Year for 2023/24. He has reached at least the semi-final stage of a major domestic cup competition in every one of his seasons at the club, five in a row between the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup. He has made over 220 appearances for Hibernian, scoring 13 goals, and has no senior or youth caps for England.
